We love hearing how our past pupils are getting on and welcome their success stories. If you would like to share your news, memories or photos with us and see them featured on this website, please email Samantha Hickman, Marketing Manager - The Barlow's relationship with our students shouldn't end when they celebrate their GCSE results; we want to encourage them to stay a part of our community and help inspire our current students.

Many of our students go on to College. Xaverian and Loreto regularly keep us updated as to how our students are progressing.

The McClaughlin Family

Six members of the McLaughlin family attended The Barlow between 1993 and 2009. They all went on to Xaverian College and have become successful in their own right. From left to right; Patrick, Dominick, Kieran, Colleen, Bernadette and Brendan. Here are their stories:

  • Patrick McLaughlin (The Barlow 1993-1998) studied Aerospace Engineering at The University of Manchester. He is now highly in demand as he is top in his field in Britain, working as a Chief Stress Engineer.
  • Dominick McLaughlin (The Barlow 1994-1999) studied at UMIST to complete a Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is now a Partner at a successful building firm.
  • Colleen McLaughlin (The Barlow 1997-2002) went on to the University of Manchester to complete a degree in Psychology, then completed a PGCE in Teaching. Colleen is now a Primary School Teacher at St Kentigern's RC Primary School in Fallowfield and is also a qualified TCRG, teaching Irish dancing.
  • Bernadette McLaughlin (The Barlow 1998-2003) attended City College Manchester becoming a fully qualified Make-up Artist and Hair Stylist. Bernadette is currently studying Early Years and Childhood Studies with a professional status at MMU and is a qualified TCRG, teaching Irish dancing. 
  • Brendan McLaughlin (The Barlow 1999-2004) works as a Financial Advisor for Baines and Ernst.
  • Kieran McLaughlin (The Barlow 2004-2009) was one of one hundred chosen from 15,000 candidates that were taken on by KPMG. At 18 years old, he started on a wage of £20,000pa. He is now studying a six year degree course which will see him qualify as a Chartered Accountant.                           

Dr Thomas Fox

Thomas Fox

Dr Thomas Fox was a pupil at The Barlow between 1997 and 2002. Following his GCSEs, he attended Loreto Sixth Form College where he took A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and French. His next stop was Bristol University where he did a BSc in Neuroscience, followed by his MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery). After gaining these qualifications, Thomas returned to Manchester and is currently working at North Manchester General Hospital as part of the Liver and Pancreatic Surgery Team. In December 2011, Thomas came back to The Barlow as a Guest Speaker at our Certificate Evening. He gave an encouraging speech and presented the year's school leavers with their GCSE certificates.
