Curriculum Intent

The rationale of the current Child Development curriculum (through the Cambridge National qualification) at The Barlow Roman Catholic High School is to:

  • Inspire and equip our students with independence and confidence in using skills that are relevant to the childcare sector and more widely.
  • Develop knowledge in all aspects of child development, from conception to five years, as well as providing safe and nurturing environments.
  • Develop the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to create the best conditions for a child’s development and well-being.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

OCR Cambridge National Child Development

The qualification allows for a wide breadth of study, covering:
Examination unit RO57:

  • Pre-conception health and reproduction
  • Antenatal care and preparation for birth
  • Post-natal checks and the conditions for development
  • Childhood illness and a child safe environment

Coursework unit RO58:
Creating a safe environment and understand the nutritional needs of children from birth to five years

  • Creating a safe environment in a childcare setting
  • Choosing Suitable Equipment for a childcare setting
  • Nutritional Needs of children from birth to 5 years
  • Plan, prepare and evaluate a feed or a meal

Coursework unit RO59:
Understand the development of a child from one to five years

  • Physical, intellectual and social developmental norms from 1 to 5 years
  • Stages and types of play and how play benefits development
  • Observe the development of a child aged 1 to 5 years
  • Plan and evaluate play activities for a child aged 1 to 5 years for a chosen area of development
